Singapore based artist Chan Clayrene brings new dimensions to fashion with her highly improvised yet elaborate illustrations. With a keen eye for colors, patterns and silhouettes, Chan works from a wide palette of inspiration - including her environment which is often integrated into her designs by cutting dress-shaped holes out of the substrate. What has really propelled her to Instagram stardom are her nail polish paintings, a natural progression to her experience with watercolors which she often enhances with real world objects, flowers, pearls, glitter or any other elements she can use to embellish her creations. Her multimedia works, which she calls “Artclaytion”, evokes an interesting duality. There is much spontaneity in her designs, the classic, swift brushwork of a fashion designer on a deadline. But there’s also a tremendous amount of though and imagination put into them and even the way they are photographed and presented. Far beyond just fashion, this is multidisciplinary art for the masses. We love this quote from her which illustrates how she stands at the cross roads of luxury and empowerment through creativity.
“Haute Couture is not only for runway, you can own it through your nail polish and brushes!”
It may sound absurd to someone who hasn’t seen her work. But upon witnessing what she’s capable of, there’s no doubt she’s owning her professional pedigree, pushing boundaries for her craft and just a little over 11K followers on Instagram at the moment. It’s really not difficult to see why.
