Pedrita Studio is a Lisbon based design firm founded by Rita João and Pedro Ferreira. The pair have spent years developing amazing art installations and interiors through an ingenious use of discontinued industrial ceramic tiles to create bitmapped portraits and abstract patterns. It’s difficult to imagine the logistics of such a feat, sifting through so many surplus tiles, organizing them by color and reproducing photographs with such decorative flair. The connection to such an unorthodox medium was established by Pedro’s grandfather who owned a tile shop.
Pedro and Rita describe how the tiles went from background noise to fine art in a brief interview:
Pedro: I felt a violent dislike for tiles as they were my grandfather’s business. Tiles are heavy, the stock is always of leftovers and not well packaged. There were certain logistics of the whole process that was very complex.
Rita: I remember the first time I went to the warehouse, I was stunned. I kept saying ‘Pedrro this is amazing! Show me more!’ because I was so focused on the designs and ceramic techniques which he, due to daily contact with them had failed to notice. This is how our research began and these projects came to be.
